We enjoy watching various informational videos online on various social media platforms and sometimes we do wonder how creatively the creator has communicated this complex information in a comprehensible way? Perhaps we think that the easier the video was for us to watch, the same way it might have been easier for creators. But this is not necessarily true, at least for those who are a beginner and for that matter anyone who is communicating a piece of complex information in a very simple and clear manner to the general audience. The 2 or 3 minutes of informational video we watch has a lot of complexity and the first one is how the creator should match what he speaks to the pictures, animations or videos that appear on the screen. The Storyboarding technique comes to the rescue for this.

Storyboarding is basically a graphic representation of how your video will go about, shot by shot. It is basically an outline and establishes a structure for the video to be communicated. The script is the foremost important factor in creating your video because it allows our imagination and creativity to be shown in the video in an organised and successful manner. After completion of the script then comes the storyboard that visually guides you throughout the video creation process.

To make a quick storyboard take a piece of paper and fold it 3–4 times to make 6–8 boxes based on your requirements as well as the length of your video. Now, write down or sketch through it one by one box what you expect to be on your video and what you will be telling in the script during that particular shot. You can think that it is kind of a comic book strips that you used to read as a child with the image and the bubble that appeared what they are actually saying in the scene. The storyboard could then be changed or modified according to your need. The single most importance about the storyboarding technique is that it immensely helps in planning for how effectively you can communicate your visual information in a clear and creative manner. So, next time you plan to create a video do try the storyboarding technique.
